A Few Tips for Fall Car Care Month

October 11th, 2018 by

From Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Peppermint Mochas to the thinning of the trees and falling temperatures, Fall has officially arrived.  October is Fall Car Care Month, and what better a time to make sure your vehicle is in tip-top shape in preparation for the many hazards the changing of the season brings, such as Reduced Visibility, Slippery Road Conditions, and Cooler Temperatures.

When it comes to the proper seasonal care for your car, here are a few suggestions from your friends at Shannon Motors:

Battery – Let’s be honest, nobody likes to wake up to a car that won’t start, and using one of the most common excuses with your boss to be late to work never looks good.  The lower  temperatures are tough on your Battery and having yours checked is a smart choice, or replaced   if more than 3 years old.  Another great idea is to keep a pair of Jumper Cables in your vehicle in case of Battery issues, a quick fix that can save you(or someone around you) a lot of time and get your day back on track.

Brakes – When it comes to the safety of yourself, your passengers, and those around you,  nothing is more important than the ability to STOP your vehicle, rapidly if necessary.  You  absolutely should have your Brake system checked, including the Pads, Rotors, and Drums, it is also advised to have your ABS system checked.

Tires –  If you’ve ever been confronted with a rapid loss of traction, where your car is no longer pointing the direction you intended, then you know the importance of a good set of Tires. Check for Dry-Rot or Balding areas, a good set of All-Season or Winter tires can be a lifesaver,  literally, and can often be found for seasonal bargain prices.  Tip:  The cooler temperatures can cause the pressure in your Tires to lower, it is advised to check them weekly if possible and add air if needed.

Heaters, Defrosters and Wiper Blades – Nobody likes waiting for their car to warm up   or thaw, but it beats the alternative of driving with frost reducing your visibility and frozen fingers and toes.  Make sure your Heating and Defroster systems are working properly, they can  make all the difference in the world throughout the next few months.  It is also advised to replace your Wiper Blades every 6-12 months, perhaps investing in a Winter pair to ensure  the best results even if facing White-Out conditions.

Daily Check – A quick 360-degree inspection of your vehicle each morning can be a great  way to  spot things like Headlights or Taillights that may have a bad bulb, as well as Driving Lights and Blinkers.  It is also important to make sure the conditions have not caused your visibility to be impaired, investing in an Ice Scraper to remove any built up Ice or Snow is a cheap and simple option.
